Has anyone noticed that a simmering debate about sex in schools has been elevated to the number one spot on all broadcast news? It could have been covered last week or next week but had mega coverage as a moral panic on Monday. Why?
The answer is that it is the ideal story to suppress coverage of what happened in Batley.
The teacher at Batley was teaching the National Curriculum for RS Stage 2 which has the objective of examining why Islam is opposed to any visual representations of the prophet or the works of Allah (ie: a large proportion of visual representations). In return for doing his job he was met by mass protests, immediately suspended and the authorities gave abject apologies for doing wrong.
The teacher cannot return to Batley and fears for his life. There are no penalties for hate speech against people who support British values so he has received a tirade of abuse and threats without support or recourse to the law.
We are at a turning point in our society. Either we defend our democracy and values such as free speech and freedom or we lose them.
Islamic Imam Qari Asim MBE, who is chair of the Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board (MINAB), and the British Government’s adviser on Islamophobia, called for a “change in social attitudes”. The implication is that anyone who opposes the Islamic idea of blasphemy should be guilty of hate speech. This change is likely in the long term so long as the laws against hate speech remain on the statute books. No-one is considering the rights of non-Islamic pupils to be brought up with British values.
Batley
is a turning point because it means that the government and education
system believe that the political (religious) opinions of Muslims always
trump those of the rest of the country. All Education
Authorities across the country will instruct their schools to avoid
offending Muslims and all teachers will be under no doubt that they they
will be disciplined if they do not comply. Most commentators do not
seem to realize that blasphemy includes a wide range of issues from art (aniconism) to evolution. This will affect all teaching from sex education to biology. Non-Islamic areas may be able to continue real education but increasingly there will be Islamic schools in Islamic areas and the Nation will be Balkanised. This really is a major victory for Islam.
What is surprising is that so few people seem to care. In particular the middle and media classes are avid supporters of the loss of free speech because it makes them feel holy to be protecting minorities. What they do not seem to realise is that some minorities have noxious beliefs and are already majorities in some parts of the country. These beliefs are advertised as "religious" but most are actually political with the seal of Allah upon them so that they are placed beyond political debate.
If the UK loses its free society the world will follow.
