Resolutions for A Bright Future!

The success of the UK is now the responsibility of the UK.  Here are some New Year's resolutions to guarantee a prosperous future.

The first task of the Government is to back winners.  This is how any enterprise becomes prosperous. The excellent Alok Sharma of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) might establish competing Investment Councils to provide substantial investment in the shares of successful, medium sized, UK companies. Individuals running the Councils that fail to back winners would be penalised and those who back winners lionised.  Special legislation should allow massive fines for corrupt Council members.  Now we have left the EU the "golden share" could be re-introduced.

Government purchasing should favour small and medium sized UK companies.  Any risks associated with using small suppliers should be hedged by having several sources rather than by the current method of excluding any small company. The Civil Service purchasing bias should be towards "small and dynamic" rather than large and stable.  This resolution should extend to Local Authority purchasing.

The Government should quote growth in GDP per head rather than crude GDP.  This will allow it to disconnect GDP from population growth.  A rapidly growing population is a sign of failure in this crowded island.

The UK Internet should be brought steadily under UK control.  This is necessary so that the "Internet of Things" such as controlling your oven from your workplace and self driving vehicles are safe from hacking.  It is also necessary to reduce online fraud, which is now far more serious than most other forms of theft, and to ensure the security of Internet Banking and Financial Transactions. The commercial Internet is little different from other market places except that local democratic control has been entirely removed and policing marginalised.  Would the electorate have approved of every UK region having a gigantic, rate free, out of town shopping centre with motorway access from every small town? Yet Amazon etc. are operating in exactly this way with connivance from the regulators.

At the current rate of growth the Amazon founder Jeff Bezos will soon be richer than the UK!  Allowing such personal power into the UK economy is extremely dangerous.

The precautionary principle should be enshrined in Government policy.  When COVID is over we should be prepared for the next pandemic.  We should expect that China will launch an intense campaign of subversion over the next decade and be prepared.  We should prepare for EU corruption of UK trade, business and media, they are ruthless mercantilists.  Scientists are predicting severe climate change, we should be prepared. A National Internet Firewall should be in place even if it is not used. Etc.

The BBC must either be defunded or mended. It is absurd to have a National Broadcaster that is against the idea of nation states.  It is bizarre to have an "unbiased" National Broadcaster that launches campaigns and routinely suppresses news that contradicts these campaigns. If the BBC is to be mended the Charter will need to be changed to ensure that the BBC works in the interests of the population of Britain and includes injunctions against running campaigns (however apparently "worthy") and forbids the suppression of news in its domestic programming.  It will also be necessary to ensure that BBC journalists, editors etc represent the spectrum of opinions found in the UK (such as being recruited from a range of national newspapers etc).  It is hard to believe but BBC global television news was actually broadcasting programs abroad that were forecasting the imminent collapse of the UK economy after the Referendum.  The World Service and BBC Global should be transferred to Foreign Office control or disbanded.

Measures should be taken to ensure that universities operate fair employment practices, especially in the Humanities and Teacher Training.  At present conservative candidates are excluded and marginalised - half the population is prevented from pursuing a career in the humanities.  This discrimination is far, far worse than that due to race or gender etc. and far more pernicious.  Initially there will be a lack of candidates because of the years of discrimination but this will be rapidly corrected.  This resolution is no more than actually enforcing Equalities Legislation.

Local Authorities should have responsibility for local enterprise, especially the local Internet, as well as for dispensing benefits.

Although it is tempting to use population growth as a method of increasing economic activity this is short sighted.  There is a limit to the UK population of around 80m beyond which we will not only have destroyed our beautiful countryside but will become at risk from sudden changes in global politics, economics and climate.  This is obvious when we consider that the land of the UK can only feed 50m people at best. On the precautionary principle we should stop population growth now.  It is very easy to do.

Penalties for corruption should be increased tenfold and anti-corruption laws extended to Parliament.  Corruption is a premeditated crime of greed and the corrupt will be discouraged if the odds worsen.

International trade should move towards balance which means tackling the huge deficits with the EU.  The Government should engage with CANZUK to ensure that the UK has a strong group of friends who share our political and social objectives in this rapidly changing world.

If all of these resolutions are enacted the UK will become a beacon of prosperity and stability.

Membership of the EU: pros and cons

5th December 2013, update May 2016 Nigel Lawson, ex-Chancellor of the Exchequer,  recently criticised the UK membership of the EU , the media has covered his mainstream view as if he is a bad boy starting a fight in the school playground, but is he right about the EU? What has changed that makes EU membership a burning issue?  What has changed is that the 19 countries of the Eurozone are now seeking political union to escape their financial problems.   Seven further EU countries have signed up to join the Euro but the British and Danish have opted out.  The EU is rapidly becoming two blocks - the 26 and Britain and Denmark.   Lawson's fear was that if Britain stays in the EU it will be isolated and dominated by a Eurozone bloc that uses "unified representation of the euro area" , so acting like a single country which controls 90% of the vote in the EU with no vetoes available to the UK in most decisions.  The full plans for Eurozone political union ( EMU Stage
