The Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford has just published a report on the numbers of migrants staying in the UK. The details of this report are largely about regional flows etc. The media have covered this report by saying that: "The migrant population in England is estimated to have increased by more than half a million in three years" Guardian.
The figures were seized upon by the national press because they cover the past three years, two of which had unusually low net migration figures:
Using the average rate for the level of migration we have 750,000 migrants every 3 years of which most remain in England. What is more, last year was an all time record for net migration at 298,000 for the year (almost 900,000 over 3 years).
Note that 162,000 migrants came from the EU last year.
