According to the ONS the median full time earnings in the UK were £27,200 a year in 2014.
Men earned £29441 per annum and women earned £23889 which is 81% of male earnings. However, women do less overtime than men and earn 90.5% of the male hourly pay. The actual gender gap of about 10% in full time earnings is largely due to loss of seniority resulting from the missing years when women spend time with their children. Those women who stay at work from age 22-39 actually earn more per hour than men but the women who return in their 40s have lost seniority.
Given current patterns of hours worked and childcare preferences exact equality of annual full time pay for men and women would probably indicate discrimination against men.
Disparities in income (measured in £s) between the rich and poor have been growing because the rich and the poor have been receiving the same percentage pay rises.
Public sector earnings continue to be far higher (17%) than private sector earnings, even when the huge public sector pensions are excluded. The inclusion of pension rights probably makes public sector earnings around 40% higher than private sector earnings. The public sector have managed to persuade the population that those who train people for real jobs are far more important than those who do these jobs and that those who care for the sick should have a managerial role that avoids soiling themselves with the sick etc. Aren't our teachers, nurses, policemen and firemen etc. wonderful? Aren't the electorate stupid?
If the Public Sector were the servants of the People they would be earning the same or less than the Private Sector, if they are the servants of the governing elite they will be paid more to guarantee their loyalty.
