Newsflash: Cameron announces £1200 "childcare support" for after the election in 2015 to replace some of the £1500 child benefit that was removed in January. (See Guardian article).
David Cameron has made yet another commitment to deflect criticism. He promised a referendum in 2017 to stifle the anti-EU faction in his party and is now promising welfare reforms for old people in 2017.
The Tories are unlikely to be in power in 2017. Labour has already said it is unlikely to support an EU referendum in 2017 and no-one can guarantee that Cameron's welfare reforms will be enacted. These promises for 2017 do not even carry the weight of manifesto commitments.
After his EU "initiative" Cameron realised that promising changes in 2017 was widely publicised by the press and that journalists accepted this as a credible policy initiative. Having realised that he can fool the press so easily he is using the same ploy again. Shame on the journalists for being so stupid. Shame on us if we do not realise that Cameron is mocking us, treating us as stupid, brainless children.
On the subject of the supposed welfare reforms, they would be a measure to preserve the riches of the very rich and destroy the middle classes. A £75000 cap on nursing fees means that a married couple would need to spend about £150000 each on BOTH nursing and accommodation before the relief occurs so a married couple would need to spend £300000 before getting assistance. This is enough to ensure that any middle class people would sell their house before obtaining welfare in old age. If you had a million pounds then the cap would be a great improvement on the current situation, giving you a subsidy for expensive nursing fees.
