The Arc Manche is a geographical area that has been invented by the EU. It is made up of the British and French territories bordering or within the English Channel:
The EU has instituted a heavily funded programme designed to promote the idea of common citizenship of the areas that border the Channel. The "Interreg IVA France (Channel) England" programme was approved by the European Commission in a Decision on 19 September 2008. It benefits from a 173,5 million euros envelope from the European Regional Development Fund which enables the co-funding of cooperation projects across the Channel between France and the United Kingdom. It aims to
« promote the emergence - between the French and English parties - of a space of common citizenship fostering a sense of belonging to a cross-border area, and endowed with a specific identity, through support given to concrete and lasting cooperation. »
In other words to attempt to replace the national identities of those either side of the Channel with an identity that will suit European integration.
The scheme's intentions show that the EU is, in the long run, determined to rid itself of nation states.
Deliberately destroying the diversity of Nation States out of fear of difference is racist although, paradoxically, those who support this idea consider themselves to be "anti-racist". Not being racist involves respect for other people but wanting to rid the world of all difference shows childish fear of "the other".
