I am sitting, looking over a valley of greenery in suburban London. The odd roof of a house is visible and a road. Last weekend I took my dog for a walk across the patchwork of green fields to the south. The hedges were bright green with new growth and birds were singing with the Spring.
On the way back home I saw new housing entirely erasing the beauty of the land. The birds and rabbits that I had seen were not threatened species so the housing stamped out an entire area of them. I have met people who say they support "Green" politics yet revel in this destruction and plead for the population of our country to be increased until the beauty of the land has died and no-one wishes to increase here any more. They really are not "Green" at all.
The poor who are rooted to the land are left behind. The rest of "us" were educated to go to University, work and the world. The poor still live in the street where I was born. They still know each other. Their part of town, being of little landscape value, lies unprotected against the new housing that slowly surrounds them, erasing their world, stamping on their identity. The television people act as Saints, demanding that they make room for more. The less educated poor cannot make a case for their life as it is and this allows erudite developers and television Saints to sneer at their "ignorant prejudice".
Lets be completely honest. Much of money is made by growth, by consumption and by consuming the land. The consumption is a wildfire, creating its own cause as populations move to where the consumption is hottest. At every advertising break we are told that consumption becomes us and this is creating a new religion with its own television saints who are only seeking to fan the flames.
What they want is your land. They want to prise you away from it. They want the world to fragment into dispersed family groups and social networks that care only for themselves so that the land and its people have no voice. They want our physical and social landscape to become a common land equally exploitable by all the world for their greedy, corporate profit.
We must never forget that it was because the People in this land, the British, were able to fight as a whole People who supported each other in a Civil War that we opened the road to democracy. The People achieved this because they were protected from external interference by the sea. The USA inherited our democratic impetus and Europe was finally freed by us. It was our land, our sense of creating a people that support each other that created the modern world. None of us can remember the absolute rule of those who had power in 1600 AD but we must remember that the powerful have always wanted to overturn the British achievement.
Within 20 years of a "Remain" vote in the EU Referendum the population of Britain will be over 70 million and the EU will have carved up the country into neutralised regions such as the "Arc Manche" so that it will never rise again:
The Arc Manche is a geographical area that has been invented by the EU. It is made up of the British and French territories bordering or within the English Channel:
The EU has instituted a heavily funded programme designed to promote the idea of common citizenship of the areas that border the Channel. The "Interreg IVA France (Channel) England" programme was approved by the European Commission in a Decision on 19 September 2008. It benefits from a 173,5 million euros envelope from the European Regional Development Fund which enables the co-funding of cooperation projects across the Channel between France and the United Kingdom. It aims to
« promote the emergence - between the French and English parties - of a space of common citizenship fostering a sense of belonging to a cross-border area, and endowed with a specific identity, through support given to concrete and lasting cooperation. »
In other words to attempt to replace the national identities of those either side of the Channel with an identity that will suit European integration.
