Much of the demand for new housing in the UK is due to immigration and the social housing crisis in London is partly the result of immigration.
The coalition government promised to reduce the influx of people from hundreds of thousands annually to tens of thousands. How have they done? The following quote is from the Home Office Immigration Statistics:
"The number of people granted settlement (allowed to stay permanently) reached a record 241,000 in 2010 (including dependants), having increased significantly in recent years. However the latest data, for the year to June 2011, show an 8% fall in grants of settlement (208,000), with decreases in both the work and the family categories. In the second quarter of 2011 there were (only) 4,800 asylum applications..."
This amounts to 70% of UK population growth (See Predicted population of Britain). Property analysts clearly link this influx of people to the housing crisis in the UK.
What is the government's response to the need for hundreds of thousands of new homes to house these people? England has an appalling housing crisis so what will the government do? Decrease inflows? No, they propose to overturn the planning regulations that have at least preserved some semblance of "England" in the face of epic population inflows over the past two decades:
Mr Shapps, the housing minister said that: "there were also plans to allow land twice the size of Leicester to be released in order to build homes across the country."
This should make any English person weep. Our governing classes are happy to continue this epic migration, destroying our natural and social environment, creating problems from adult illiteracy to pressure on the NHS for no reason other than that it makes them appear holy and so get the votes of the middle classes. The electorate must promise themselves that they will not vote for the pro-migration parties (labour and lib-dem) and avoid voting Tory until this migration crisis is resolved.
Incidentally, if you are anti-immigration you have a democratic tool, just never vote Labour again, Labour set up the current mass migration in 1997 - just look at the migration graphs.
The graph above shows the scale of UK immigration. (See Office of National Statistics Figures. Notice how Labour doubled the migration rate as their first policy initiative in 1997 and also the epic scale of UK immigration which accounts for 30% of all EU population growth - equal to the population of Birmingham every 4 years).
Immigration is also creating shortages of social housing, especially in London where in some boroughs up to 50% of new social housing lets are being awarded to foreign nationals.
The government body appointed to examine the effects of immigration, the Equality and Human Rights Commission, was clearly aware of this problem so commissioned a report, Social housing allocation and immigrant communities, to head off any criticism of the free movement of labour. It had an executive summary that headlined the fact that only 2% of those in social housing in the UK (including Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland) were recent immigrants. The report carefully hid the interesting figure which is the percentage of those being awarded new social housing placements now.
The principle graphic from this report, shown below, was intended to show that 2% of the nationwide total of all social housing is a tiny amount (unlike 11% of new allocations in London or 50% of new allocations in Harringey). The graphic cannot hide the fact that immigration is putting huge pressure on rented accommodation, especially private rented accommodation, nationwide.
The situation in London is far more serious. The effect of immigration on social housing provision has been investigated by Migrationwatch whose ".. research, is focused on London where the waiting list increased by 60% between 2002 and 2010 to 362,000. It shows that at least 11% of social housing lets in London were given to foreign nationals. In the boroughs of Ealing and Haringey half of all social housing lets went to foreign nationals." (Who is being allocated social housing in London?).
It is the sheer scale of immigration that is causing the problems. As you can see, a tiny country like England cannot accept half a million new people every year without causing suffering to the inhabitants. Immigration is causing suffering now but the government is deliberately misinforming the people about the cause of this suffering. If the southern European economies collapse even further we cannot offer all of our social housing to economic migrants and to those who want free social security, health and education. If the immigration and migration rates were halved and returned to the pre-labour, pre-1997 levels it would give us all a breathing space.
These globalisers must be stopped but the English have been educated at school and through media propaganda to believe that globalisation and the free movement of labour is the answer to our problems when it is obviously the cause of them.
